När Kina fick OS lovade man att respektera de mänskliga rättigheterna. Men när världens blickar nu riktas mot Tibet är fängelserna fulla av politiska fångar. Munken Palden Gyatso var i 33 år en av dem, nu ägnar han sig åt att vittna om vad han och hans medfångar blev utsatta för – bland annat med hjälp av utsmugglade tortyrredskap.
Mellan 26 och 59 års ålder var svält, tortyr och förnedring en del av hans vardag som fånge i de kinesiska fängelserna i Tibet. När han efter 33 år, till sist lyckades fly till Indien smugglade Palden Gyatso med sig en väska med begagnade tortyrinstrument, för att visa omvärlden vad som pågår bakom fängelsemurarna.
Fotografen Joakim Eneroth och journalisten Malin Rosén träffade munken Palden Gyatso i Indien för att fotografera och intervjua honom och ytterligare tortyroffer.
Joakims starka bilder har fått stor uppmärksamhet internationellt och har publicerats i dagstidningar både i och utanför Sverige. De vittnar om det som händer i Tibet och är ett unikt bildmaterial i västvärlden.

Ever since the People's Republic of China signed the United Nations Convention against Torture in 1986, Chinese officials have consistently denied the use of torture in their judicial system. But the testimonies of political refugees from Tibet point to the opposite.
During the 33 years that the Buddhist monk Palden Gyatso spent in a Chinese prison, starvation, torture and humiliation were a part of his everyday life. When he escaped to India he managed to smuggle with him the instruments of his torture. These instrument bear the testimony of what is happening inside Tibet. The book has been created together with Amnesty International
Joakim Eneroth was born 1969 in Sweden. He graduated from Nordens Fotoskola in Biskops-Arnö in 1999. He has since been honoured in the Swedish Picture Of The Year (portrait) and won first prize in Prix Voies Off 2005 in Arles, France. In May 2007 his project Seeing Reality Behind My Projections was selected by Alain Sayag for an exhibition at the Guandong Museum of Modern Art in China. A book by Eneroth, Swedish Red, published by Steidl, will be released in August 2008.
