Channeling her own, as well as collective Swedish and American migration
histories of longing, love and loss, with Emigrant Memoir photographer
Linda Maria Thompson explores the state of being that is in-between. Her
site-responsive approach takes us to the often-romanticized American
West, to the environs of her current home in Ångermanland weaving
together the fates of emigrants, immigrants, migrants - past and present.
Formally trained as a photojournalist, Thompson’s practice is in itself in
migration; embracing subjectivity and a variety of materials and
techniques, including antique analog photographic processes, plant-based
emulsions, screen-capture, digital photography of archival film, images and
texts. This work, through photographs and texts, raises questions about
how we see and experience migration while offering an opportunity to
reflect upon our relationship to the documentary image.
Features more than 60 images, 12 essays and an introduction by
Linda Maria Thompson. Includes a detailed image index.
Each book is signed and numbered.
Linda Maria Thompson (1978, Mariefred) is a Swedish-American
photographer and researcher based in Ångermanland, northern Sweden.
Her work explores questions surrounding transience and impermanence on
both a personal and political scale. Born in Sweden, raised in the
Midwestern United States, and now returned to Sweden, Linda channels
her roles as both a native of -and immigrant to- Sweden in her approach to
projects that challenge the discourse surrounding migration. Linda has a
background in photojournalism with a bachelor of arts in photojournalism
from the University of Montana and a Master of Arts in photojournalism
from Mid Sweden University. For 6 years she was a staff photographer at
the Missoulian newspaper covering western Montana. She is on
permanent staff as a lecturer in photography at the Design Department of
Mid Sweden University. Her photographs have been published and
exhibited internationally. Her debut monograph In Place of Memory was
published by Teg Publishing in 2016 which received several awards and
honors.
